Torq Longboard

Features, construction and review of one of the best selling surfboards

When it comes to surfboards for everyone, of good quality and at the right price, Torq is probably one of the first names that comes to mind.

Torq Surfboard is a company based in Cascais in Portugal, founded in 2012 by Sebastian Wenzel, former professional windsurfer, shaper for Fanatic and other Brands, distributor and manager of NSP. Sebastian himself also started the ISA (International Surf Alliance) which brings together seven major distributors from all over the world to share synergies and provide quality products at a lower price. This has always been one of Torq's main objectives: to provide products with the best possible value for money.

In just over 10 years Torq surfboards have set a new standard in the epoxy surfboard market, offering a unique combination of strength, performance and price. But Torq, for several years now, has not only been synonymous with resistant boards for beginners. Thanks to collaborations with brands such as Channel Island and with professional surfers, Torq has managed to establish itself more and more among everyday surfers. Just think of the famous Torq Pod Mod, a board with a super tested shape but at a cheaper price than the Channel Island model, as well as being more resistant and for this reason chosen by many surfers.

Torq surfboards are produced in Taiwan, in the Playmaker plant, one of the world's leading manufacturers of sports equipment, where, among other things, they produce snowboard brands such as Nitro, Head, Rossignol. Basically a guarantee of reliability. It is a technologically advanced factory, which uses numerical control machines to make the aluminum molds with which the surfboards are produced and which provides Torq with 7 types of technology to produce surfboards with different characteristics adapt to the needs of every surfer.

Torq TET Tecnology

The TET Torq Epoxy Technology developed by Torq for the production of its surfboards, represented a revolution in the construction of epoxy surfboards. Over the years Torq has gradually added other technologies and materials, but this is the heart of the process.

It all starts with the computer design of the CAD file needed to make the aluminum mold of the table. The EPS Blank is not shaped by filing a parallelepiped, but the EPS is injected directly into the aluminum mold, eliminating any waste and ensuring 100% accuracy. At this point the blank is covered with fiberglass and laminated with epoxy resin, again the process is controlled through the computer to limit any waste. After that the fin boxes are added, the graphics and the board is pressed, finished and completed.

A process therefore perfectly optimized to reduce any waste and guarantee a product exactly as designed, with no possibility of error.

Furthermore, the choice of materials, such as epoxy resin, guarantees the strength and durability of the product.

The LONGBOARD is one of Torq's most versatile and popular models, so successful that it is now developed in several variants, different from each other but with the same name. In fact, this sometimes risks generating a bit of confusion, so let's try to clarify.

First of all, the LONGBOARD Torq is available in two technologies: TET and TET-CS. We have already talked about TET technology. As for the TET-CS version, however, it is an addition of Carbon stripe, a carbon stripe in the center that allows you to reduce the lamination of the board and thus obtain a lighter but equally resistant longboard. In addition to the central carbon strip, the TET-CS boards also feature an additional sheet of wood, sandwiched between two layers of fibre. The TET-CS version is therefore lighter, with the same resistance.

In addition to the different technologies, it is good to keep in mind that there are also differences related to the measures. In fact, the LONGBOARD line includes boards ranging from 8 feet to 9.6 but have different characteristics, beyond the length.

The 8 footer is intended as a mini-long or minimalibu and has a 3 fin configuration.

In sizes 8'6 - 9'0 we have a very easy and versatile longboard, also suitable for beginners

In sizes 9'1 - 9'6 we have a traditional noserider.

Let's compare the LONGBOARD 9'0 and the LONGBOARD 9'1 to understand what the differences are.

TORQ LONGBOARD 9'0

The 9 foot LONGBOARD is an extremely versatile and easy to use board, even for those who are new to longboarding. It has an intermediate rocker and rounded rails to glide in small waves and be guided right up to the nose. More experienced surfers will find a fast midsection, with a tail pulled in just enough to keep the board fast and loose.

The fin configuration is the classic 2+1. The 8 foot instead has a thruster configuration to be used as a funboard.

After almost a year of using this board we have had the opportunity to test its construction and resistance and we can 100% confirm what we have already said about other Torqs, such as the pod mod for example. They are really super resistant boards, perfect for those who don't want to have to constantly worry about their board.

As far as the feeling is concerned, it is a really manageable longboard, suitable as the first "serious" board after sponge riding or as a longboard for all conditions. A board that helps you catch lots of waves, in all conditions.

TORQ LONGBOARD 9'1

The 9'1 foot LONGBOARD is a noserider focused on stability and trim. A board for slightly more experienced longboarders or those aiming for classic style in small waves. The board features a low rocker and wider nose with a nice spoon under the nose to ensure more stability and planing. The 9'1 has no V concave but a round bottom for a more classic feel.
