The Surfskate Medina Camo was born from the collaboration between Yow and the 2 times world champion Gabriel Medina, a surfer who certainly needs no introduction. Medina designed this surfskate for surfing training, in order to have a board that would allow him to push all his maneuvers to the bottom, on any terrain.
The Medina 33.5 is a surfskate with a wide deck: nice long and wide but with a rather narrow wheelbase.
In reality it is a project that combines two of the most popular yow shapes, modified to better meet Gabriel Medina's tastes. The nose is that of the Kontiki 34 ”but has been slightly widened to obtain an even faster and more responsive system. The tail instead is that of Lakey Peak, a surfskate appreciated precisely for its comfortable tail. All on a high concave mold to create a very responsive, yet comfortable board with enough grip to keep your feet attached to the board even in the most critical situations.
Regarding the concave it must be said that the new 2022 model uses the new molds with increased concave, which we also talked about in this post on the yow 2022 models
Yow Medina Camo vs. La Santa vs. Kontiki
To give you some measurements, let's compare the Medina Camo with other similar Yow decks. For our comparison we chose two other yow best sellers: La Santa and Kontiki.

According to the measurements, Medina Camo and La Santa are two almost identical surfskates. The Medina is just a little longer and wider. Same wheelbase, on paper. In fact, although the La Santa's wheelbase is 17 on paper, it is actually 17.5 ... We have measured it multiple times and in different editions from 2020 onwards. The Surfskate Yow La Santa has a 17.5 wheelbase, therefore just slightly wider than the Medina Camo.
Another difference that does not emerge from the technical data sheets but which can be seen by comparing them from life is that in the medina the trucks are slightly more advanced than in the La Santa. This makes the Medina a little more reactive and aggressive.
As for the Concave, Nose and Tail Rocker the mold from which they come out is the same, so we have the same curves on the two decks.

The Kontiki is another surfskate that looks a lot like the Medina Camo. Medina himself said he used it as a base, but widened it to have more foot support and make it more responsive. In fact, the medina is slightly shorter but wider, especially in the center and on the tail. As for the Concave, Nose and Tail Rocker we have the same curves on the two decks.
Yow surfskate Medina Camo features and conduction
Yow Medina Camo è un surfskate pensato per l'allenamento al surf. Questo è un surf skate progettato per allenarti fuori dall'acqua nel pumping, bottom turn, top turn, cut back eccetera. Ma non solo in flat. Il Medina è pensato anche, anzi forse principalmente, per allenarti su tutte le strutture che possono simulare un'onda. Dalle onde di legno al park. Il suo deck ampio, il concavo profondo ed il kick su tail e nose sono pensati per tenere i piedi incollati sul deck permettendoti di spingere il più possibile.
Ma veniamo alla sensazione che si ha sotto ai piedi.
Come per gli altri Yow salendoci sopra provi subito quella sensazione di estrema leggerezza e morbidezza che ti fa riconoscere uno Yow in mezzo agli altri surfskate. Per un principiante che sale per la prima volta su un surfskate può essere una sensazione di instabilità, spiazzante e non troppo confortevole. Come diciamo sempre però basta poco tempo per prendere confidenza con il movimento e superato l'imbarazzo iniziale anche i principianti ci si trovano molto bene, anzi lo trovano più facile di molti altri sistemi.
Il pumping con il Medina Camo è molto fluido. Lo skate parte facilmente anche da fermo e accelera subito. Puoi iniziare a pompare per generare velocità. In pratica più spingi, più risponde ed accelera.
Il Medina ha un wheelbase di 17, quindi abbastanza stretto. Questo gli permette di girare veramente molto stretto e riuscire a simulare le manovre del surf in flat in pochissimo spazio. La posizione dei truck (leggermente più avanti rispetto ad altri modelli) fa sì che appena spingi impostando la curva gira praticamente su sè stesso. Ma non è solo la posizione dei truck: anche la larghezza del deck ed il suo shape, contribuiscono alla reattività della tavola.
Il Medina Camo è un surfskate piuttosto aggressivo. Gira veloce, agile. Ma nonostante questo da anche un buon feeling, piuttosto rassicurante. I piedi trovano un bell'appoggio non solo grazie alle dimensioni ma anche e soprattutto grazie al concavo ed allo shape del deck con quel rialzo in corrispondenza delle ruote che da una parte aiuta ad evitare il wheelbite e dall'altra aiuta a bloccare i piedi in posizione evitando di scivolar via. Questa sensazione di piedi bloccati effettivamente quest'anno è aumentata un po' in tutti i deck yow grazie ai nuovi stampi con concavo aumentato.
In più occasioni abbiamo avuto modo di provarlo anche in park, su rampe o su onde artificiali. Il Medina nel park è nel suo ambiente naturale. Un surfskate che gira stretto e veloce ma con il giusto appoggio per i piedi per farti sempre sentire a tuo agio.
Our advice
Consigliamo il Medina Camo a:
- surfisti esperti: ottimo surfskate per il warm up prima di entrare in acqua e per allenarsi al pumping su ogni terreno.
- surfisti e skaters in cerca di un surfskate reattivo per divertirsi in park.
