Hayden Shapes surfboard

The Australian brand that wrote the history of surfing

Haydenshapes Surfboards is an Australian surfboard brand, made world famous for its award-winning Hypto Krypto (3 times Surfboard of the Year - USA and AUS).

The owner of the brand is Hayden Cox, an Australian shaper capable of creating a best seller that has changed the concept of surfboard. In addition, for years he has been carrying on two patents that he uses in his futureflex and PE epoxy construction boards.

FutureFlex is a rich mix of modern materials designed to push the performance of modern design. The FutureFlex construction combines a high-density molded EPS core with no traverses  and laminated with biaxial fiberglass, epoxy resin and a parabolic carbon fiber frame . The carbon fiber frame inside the laminate is the key to the performance of the product as a whole. Designed to maximize speed and ride while minimizing twisting, FutureFlex essentially stores and releases energy as the surfer traverses a curve.

PE epoxy is what Hayden Cox sees as a more than valid alternative to the traditional construction in PU (Polyurethane Polyester), PE (Polyurethane Epoxy) combines a polyurethane foam core with high quality wooden crosspieces , which is laminated to hand using a fiberglass cloth and a high quality epoxy resin . Haydenshapes chooses to use epoxy and PE construction for two key reasons. First, the optically superior lightening ingredient significantly improves the whiteness of the table. Second, Cox ensures that its unique epoxy is more flexible than polyester and retains the lively flex pattern typically associated with a new board.

But let's see some of the models in the Haydenshapes range.

Hypto Krypto

We can't talk about Hayden shapes without talking about the board that made the brand famous: the Hypto Krypto . A one-of-a-kind board, one of the first to be defined as "one board quiver" which in a nutshell indicates a board for all conditions.

But what is the main feature of the Hypto Krypto?

The Hypto Krypto is a very short board but with a wide nose and flat rocket. This means that the board starts quickly even on small and not very powerful waves. But Hayden didn't just want a small board for small waves, he wanted it to be as fast and performant as a short. And that's why the tail of the board is so tight that it allows riders to practice tight and fast turns. Thanks to well-designed rails the Hypto Krypto is a board that enters the wall quickly and holds even in double head wave conditions.

In this video you can see how Craig Anderson surfs double Head waves with a 5'4 ''.

But the Hypto Krypto is not a board to be used only on very large waves, thanks to its generous measures and is also excellent in the conditions of medium / small sea days. Hypto Krypto is a board that gives its best on smooth and clean waves. And this, if we want, can be its limit.

The main problem is choosing the right size which is not always that easy but it is essential to get the most out of this board. To make you understand what I mean I want to tell you the experience of a dear friend of mine, and very experienced surfer, who lives in Fuerteventura. This winter we spoke and talking about boards he tells me that he tried a Hypto Krypto 5.8 for the first time just last winter but that he was not particularly impressed by it, quite the contrary. A few months later we meet and he tells me "I tried the best board I've ever ridden, it's crazy, you have to try it ... it's the hypto Krypto 5.4". But wasn't it the table you called a half ciofeca two months ago, I ask him? Yes, but in fact it was I who did not understand, he tells me. The first time I used a 5.8 but for me it was just huge. My measure is 5.4 or at least 5.6 and if you hit the measure this board is a bomb. But there are no half measures, you can't go wrong!

Moral: for an intermediate-advanced level it is advisable to choose the board that is undersized compared to the size with which you usually surf.

Hypto Krypto Step Up

Hypto Krypto Step Up is a step up from the flagship Hypto Krypto model. A reinterpretation of the model dedicated mainly to how rough the sea becomes.

The Hypto Krypto Step Up is closer to a shortboard, both in terms of measures and as a way of handling. Keeping the rocket flat and a generous tip has been added a nice fish tail and a very thin exit profile, to cling even more to the tubing walls. Concave that from single under the chest passes to double and ends with a Vee all height of the fins.

Hayden recommends using the 1-2 '' board more this time than the Hypto Krypto.
It's a board that like its sister gives its best on smooth and clean waves. Despite being a board for big waves it can start incredibly early and work well even on soft waves.

hypto kripto soft

The iconic Hypto Krypto transformed into a soft board project. Purists will certainly turn up their noses, but after touching it with hand we can assure you that this is not the usual soft plasticona, but a soft one with a soul.

The soft that is proposed by Hayden has in fact something original and particular. The Hypto krypto soft top is a board that wants to find the right compromise between tradition and modern performance with an extra boost on pure and simple fun. The internal construction is the same as the Hypto Kripto Future Flex: an internal parabolic carbon fiber frame, molded rails based on the original, all covered with a Soft Top shell to offer performance you would never expect from previous soft boards.

The boxes of the fins are, as in the rigid boards, embedded in the structure (it does not have the passing fins typical of soft).

The result is an extremely resistant, safe board, with which to have fun without worries. Suitable for surfers of any caliber, including elite ones. The versatility and the similarity with the original Hypto Kripto allow you to excel in surfing even beyond small beach breaks and train in all those maneuvers and conditions that can create some concern with a rigid board.

LOOT

LOOT is the new project that Hayden proposes for 2020. A board that, like the Hypto Krypto, is dedicated to a large slice of surfers.
In fact, the LOOT is a board for all conditions from days of small and disturbed sea to epic days with overhead waves.
It can be chosen both in small sizes as a high performance board or as a cruiser in sizes 6'4 '' - 7 '.

A board that, when used in small sizes, is closer to the skate style than to traditional surfing. A very flat rocket and a very thin trailing edge, a generous tail for easy paddling and an early start. The board closes with a nice diamond tail and comes with a 5 fin configuration to please everyone.

Definitely a board that will talk about itself and that we will soon find in the water even in our seas.

Loot soft

An absolute novelty for 2021 will be the LOOT soft top version.

A soft board with performance characteristics worthy of a resin board, even if it does not use the construction of the HyptoKripto Soft. Also in this case the fins are not through but has the boxes like a normal surfboard.

The Loot Soft is designed to be a board suitable for a wide range of surfers from the beginner - intermediate looking for a board to progress and that can always be used on days of small sea up to the expert rider who wants a high performance board to try tricks or to be used on Close out days.

The Loot Soft will be available in sizes from 5 '(about 30 liters) up to 8' (about 80 liters) and prices will start from € 300

Raven (new model 2021)

RAVEN is more than a high performance shortboard, it is a modern shortboard reminiscent of the carve of the 90s.

Designed to surf waves from 3 feet up and designed to be used rail to rail. Pro rider Dion wanted his model to be distinctive and suitable for everyday conditions, and then seriously shine when the waves kick in.

A curved rocker allows everyone from intermediate to experienced surfer to ride through their curves. A low to medium entry rockerline allows for easy paddling with the ability to pick up speed instantly, while a medium tail rocker that switches to a dovetail produces tighter carvings. A concave that passes from single in the chest part to then go to double and conclude with a slight V bee in closing.

Dion's signature shortboard infuses balance between the new performance surf but recalls features that allow for that rail-to-rail surf we all crave.

The RAVEN will be available with futures and fcsII scasse in PU version at a price starting from € 625

Misc

Hayden Miscellaneous (MISC) was born from an idea: the desire to create a modern twin fin (or 2 + 1) with the performance characteristics of a short. Often the twin fin concept is combined with a more fluid and linear style but for some years now many shapers have been offering their revisited versions of the classic twin fins.

Haydenshapes MISC is a versatile and performing twin fins and, considering that the board can also be used with stabilizer fin, it is not really a pure "twin" in the strict sense. Regardless, this twin's design is to ride and feel like a performance board.

Starting with the untitled model, Hayden uses a fish tail well behind the front fins, then releases the water later, which is why the board holds the edge well. The MISC also has a wide nose, with a lot of volume in the middle and consequently great paddling speed. Exceptional "flow" and "glide" sensations are the best sensations to describe this board.

Hayden has positioned the toe of the double fins a little straighter to generate a lot of speed. The fin boxes have also been placed further back in the board.
This rearward shift forces the rider to shift their position backward for clean, smooth culve.

Untitled V2

“Untitled” is a lively board designed to offer speed, versatility and fun. Having a slightly wider shape, this dovetail shortboard has a single deep concave that goes double up to a V which takes you at top speed in the softest day conditions.

The Untitled by Haydenshapes is a great all day board and has a wide range of use in waves from 1 to 6 feet.
With this board you can safely surf both very vertical waves and have fun on flatter and less powerful waves. Untitled is a performing and versatile board, suitable for an advanced level.

Holy Grail

Holy Grail is a unique project of its kind. A board with a very particular shape and with a management that aims to revolutionize the principles of surfing.

Hayden designed the Holy Grail wider and flatter in the front half to allow for speed in the soft sections, and then used a sidecut to streamline the tail for added grip on the steeper sections. The sidecut creates a slightly concave outline relative to the rest of the convex of the board.

Dion Agius called the Holy Grail, after trying it, the best board he has ever used, while Noel Salas (Surf 'n Show) called it "something unlike any other board I have ever surfed in 34 years of surfing and that every person should have in his quiver. "

So Holy Grail is a great everyday surf board for waves ranging from 1-6 'surf. Hayden Cox specifies that this board is not for beginners. It is a board that will allow you to improve your surfing if your level is already good. The Holy Grail is a tovola that works rail to rail and this is essential to appreciate its qualities.

I would be very curious to try this model to see if my level between decent and half decent will make me appreciate this "Holy Grail". :))
